Russia wants to monopolise wine production
The Russian State Duma is to debate the state-monopolisation of domestic wine production.
This, supporters argue, would increase quality as well as boosting state coffers. Moreover, it would make the Russian wine market less dependent on imports should the government ban wine imports in response to Western sanctions.
The EU, US and Australia have been key players in sanctioning Russia in a bid to de-escalate military operations in eastern Ukraine. Moscow has retaliated with import restrictions. So far wine imports, which accounted for almost 50% of Russian consumption in 2013, have not been sanctioned.
